Social & Cultural Module

Duration of Module: 7 Weeks (one term per TY class)
Based on one afternoon a week (6 Periods)

 Aims:
  • To develop a student’s appreciation for their culture.
  • To develop the student’s knowledge of their culture and history.
  • To develop social skills
  • To develop pride in our culture, past and present.
Objectives:
  • The student shall be able to recognise places of cultural, historical and social importance.
  • The student shall better understand the forces that have shaped Irish culture and history.
  • The student shall recognise how our culture reflects upon society today.
  • The student shall begin to evaluate the importance of history and culture on a personal level

Teaching and Learning Strategies:
  • Students will visit places of social, cultural and historical importance.
  • Students will complete descriptions & reviews based on visits.
  • Tour guides present relevant information.
  • Students are encouraged & given the opportunity to ask questions & to participate in interactive learning where available.

Content:
Visits to some of the following places, with guided tours and worksheets:l

  1. Croke Park GAA Museum
  2. Ski Club of Ireland
  3. Causey Farm
  4. Go-Karting
  5. Dublin Zoo
  6. Zip-It
  7. Skill Zone

Students attend 5-7 of the places listed above.

Assessment:
  • Each student will present a written description & evaluation based on their visits.
  • Each student is expected to attend all of the visits.
  • Ability to meet work deadlines, be punctual at meeting points, interact with tour guides and general maturity in an adult environment will be monitored.

Evaluation:
  • Students will complete an evaluation sheet at the end of the module highlighting the trips that they found most worthwhile & reasons why.
  • Teacher appraisal of each trip.
