Multimedia

The multimedia module aims to introduce students to communicating visually by creating projects in film, graphic design & presentations.

Our equipment includes a semi-professional HD video camera, handheld video camera, microphones, LED stage lighting and a sound mixing desk. The software we use includes iMovie, Adobe Photoshop & Microsoft PowerPoint.

What happens in the class?

Students work in teams of four throughout the year on a series of projects. Projects are based around real school events as much as possible. This allows the students to make an active contribution to school life as well as getting a large audience for their work.

Click on the diary on the right to see what each group in the class is working on this year.

The Fresh Film Festival is funded by the Arts Council as a competition for young Irish film makers. It's the main event for young Irish filmmakers and this year we had two entries which made it into the Dublin Heats on the 4th March 2015. These films were Paper Stars and Underneath it All. 35 students from St Colmcille's attended the Dublin Heats in the IFI, Temple Bar and the standard was extremely high this year. Paper Stars was one of the films chosen by the judges to go forward to the National Final in Limerick on the 25th March!

Mr Bates's Transition Year Multimedia class were given the challenge of creating the December 2014 assembly and presenting it in a fun and entertaining way.

2014 Projects

This video was inspired by the fantastic clip created by St Brendan's College in Mayo, "Time to say Mayo" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GWWBY...). We couldn't resist the challenge of creating a response for the Dubs from the students and teachers in St Colmcille's Community School in Dublin.
This year's school musical was Les Miserables. Our students followed the actors and set designers in the weeks before the production to capture what happens behind the scenes of this great event.
The Senior Boys Basketball team had a fantastic year, our TY sports captains followed the team over several weeks to capture their story.
Every year a selected group of transition year students in St. Colmcille's C.S complete the 'Foundation Level' GAA Coaching award in conjuction with Ballyboden St. Endas GAA Club. The video summarises all aspects of the course and also some of the work that Ballyboden carry out in the local area.
Students make a short film to promote Random Acts of kindness in our everyday lives.
This year Fr Peter McVerry spoke at our christmas service about the challenge of homelessness that faces many people in our society. Students visited one of Fr McVerry's drop-in centres in the city centre and interviewed several people there in order to hear their stories and to highlight the incredible work that the Peter McVerry Trust is doing.

Assessment

A key challenge in Multimedia is learning how to work as a team in order to complete a challenging project, therefore while students receive individual marks for effort, they are marked as a team on their assignments. As many of the projects students work on in this module have external deadlines, students agree a set of goals for the end of each term that their team can be marked on. Details of the goals for each term are shown below.

Term 1 Assignment

Create a slide for each of the first world problems that your group was given. We're looking for:
  • High quality images
  • Clear contrast between text and background
  • An image that captures the essence of the first world problem
  • Good choice of where to put the text in the slide
  • Appropriate size, font and colour used for text
