French

Aims & Objectives

  • Students will develop a love of France and the French language that will continue into leaving cert.
  • Students will be more autonomous in their study of French by engaging in a range of activities and project work incorporating pair and group work.
  • Students will be able to engage in conversation on a variety of subjects (themselves, family, school, their area, the working world, holidays, leisure time activities) 
  • Students will develop an understanding of various aspects of French culture including cinema, music and food.
  • Students will develop an understanding of Francophone countries and current affairs in France.

Film
  • Through the study of film, students will be more aware of the different sections of French society.
  • Students will learn the background to life in the suburbs of cities such as Paris and Marseille.
  • Students will be more aware of social problems that exist in France. 
  • Students will be able to compare life in Dublin to life in France.
  • Students will be able to describe characters using adjectives, idioms etc.
  • Students will expand their vocabulary to make written production more descriptive.
  • Students will learn familiar language (slang) to help them understand the films they will study.
  • Students will be able to analyse scenes and will learn technical vocabulary relating to film.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast different films.
  • Students will learn the vocabulary to express opinion and will be able to write reviews of various films.
Grammar: 
Adjectives, comparatives, superlatives, revision of present tense.

Assessment: 
Continuous assessment and choice of facebook page or film review.
Preparation pour l’examen oral.

Preparation of mini document
This Module will prepare students for their first experience of a French oral exam. They will be examined by an external examiner and will prepare a “document” which they will discuss with the examiner in the course of the exam. This will be a good preparation for Leaving Cert French.


  • Students will be able to discuss various topics in relation to their daily life, their experience of Transition Year and future plans in a formal interview with an external examiner.
  • Students will be able to describe themselves and their personality.
  • They will be able to describe their family and family relationships.
  • They will revise vocabulary related to school and will be able to describe their experience of school life in France ie.  Their second year exchange.
  • They will be able to describe their local area linking it in to problems such as traffic and pollution.
  • They will revise key grammar points (present,past and future) to describe their past experiences (holidays,exchange work experience- le stage de travail) and their plans for summer holidays, Leaving Cert and University.
  • They will choose a picture/image which they will prepare in advance to present to and discuss with the examiner  (this is a key part of assessment)
